Coordinated by the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation in partnership with Shepherd University Scarborough Library and United Way of the Eastern Panhandle, we are pleased to offer the following community workshops during 2011 offered in cooperation with the WVU Division of Social Work. This one-day workshop is an introductory, beginner’s course on researching prospective corporate and foundation funders (using the Shepherd’s Scarborough Library’s Foundation Center “Cooperating Collection” resources) and the elements that create a fundable grant request. The session is lead by Amy Owen, who has more than 21 years experience in fundraising and currently serves as the executive director of the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation, joined by Christine Toms of Scarborough Library.

NOTE: Credits for WVU Continuing Education Certificate in Nonprofit Management (2 hours: Board of Directors/Governance – Board Self Governance; 1 hour Board of Directors/Governance – Board Operations) and 3 Social Work CEUs available.
Led by George W. Lilley, Jr, Ed.D. retired CEO of Valley HealthCare System, the workshop offers technical information along with seasoned discussion of effective nonprofit management techniques and culture. Staff, leaders, and volunteers of nonprofit organizations will gain greater understanding of legal and practical day-to-day aspects of charitable governance. The workshop covers the West Virginia nonprofit corporation act, concepts of Duty of Care, Obedience, and Loyalty, and will cover such essential functions as board recruitment, staff relations, committee relationships, staff versus board roles, and more.

NOTE: Credits for WVU Continuing Education Certificate in Nonprofit Management (3 hours Nonprofit Fundamentals – Organizational Design & Infrastructure) and 3 Social Work CEUs available.
Nonprofit organizations face ethical dilemmas on a regular basis. Even the suspicion of unethical practices could pose huge problems for an agency’s ability to succeed. This workshop will help participants identify common and emerging ethical issues in the areas of fundraising, governance, human resources, and stewardship. Discussion of ethical principles and standards to guide the actions and management of nonprofit organizations will be covered. Strategies and tools for ethical decision-making will be addressed using case studies and participant experiences. Led by Jacki Englehardt, ACSW, Coordinator of Professional & Community Education, WVU Division of Social Work, participants will be able to identify common ethical issues in nonprofit organizations and apply ethical decision-making strategies to help guide actions.
