Mini-Grants to Teachers

The Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation (EWVCF) will award Mini-Grants to Teachers in Jefferson, Berkeley, and Morgan Counties in the fall of 2016. These Mini-Grants of up to $500 will be presented to teachers who need financial assistance with special projects, materials, or classroom resources. Our Partners in Philanthropy, joined by individual donors who are committed to enhancing the quality of life in the Eastern Panhandle, have pledged more than $25,000 in total. Applications will be accepted from September 1 October 14th.  Awards will be announced on National Philanthropy Day, Thursday, November 17th.

The Need

More and more, teachers are faced with the challenge of keeping children interested and engaged with few resources beyond the basics. In its first three years, the Mini-Grants to Teachers program awarded grants to fund classroom book sets, a giant abacus, Speed Stackers, Rekenreks, an Autism Cafe, K’NEX building sets, sheet music, Lego Mindstorm kits, pedometers, Apple TVs, pBone instruments, a projector, wood chisels, an alto flute, eBooks, several robotics kits, art supplies, a river tank system, digital cameras, calculators, wireless microphones, graphic tablets, and much more. This year, Mini-Grants will be awarded to teachers who have a burning desire to improve the classroom experience for their students, and the ability to inspire the members of our grants committee to support your efforts.

How Does It Work?

Through a simple one-page application, PreK-12 public school teachers in Jefferson, Berkeley, and Morgan Counties can apply for a grant of up to $500.

The objective is to encourage and support teachers who have great ideas that will enhance the learning experience for students. Mini-Grants can be used to purchase supplies and materials for special projects; provide resources for the classroom; and support projects and programs that are not covered by school budgets or other means.

All grant recipients are expected to report on the expenditure of grant funds and the results of the supported projects by the end of the school year (June 2017). Below is a list of our 2015 Mini-Grant recipients and the projects that were funded.

Community Foundation Awards $93,150 in Scholarships to Eastern Panhandle Students

The Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation (EWVCF) honored 59 students at the annual Scholars & Donors Reception held at the Purple Iris on Thursday evening. Thirty-two endowed funds that were established by donors to honor loved ones awarded a record $93,150 in scholarships this year. Recipients included seniors from every public high school in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle.
Awards ranged from $500 to $5,000 and Martinsburg High topped the list with 18 students receiving scholarships. There were eight seniors from Musselman High, seven from Hedgesville, and three from Spring Mills. Seven Jefferson High School seniors received scholarships, as did two from Washington High. Four seniors from Berkeley Springs and one from Paw Paw rounded out the list.
A number of renewal scholarships were awarded to students already enrolled in college or university and Maerin Phillips, a second-grader at St. Joseph School, received a renewal scholarship as well. Major financial support for the Scholars & Donors Reception is provided by the foundation’s Partners in Philanthropy, especially Cornerstone Sponsors:  BB&T Wealth Management, Bowles Rice LLP, CNB Bank, First United Bank & Trust, Jefferson Distributing, and United Bank.
We will be editing and posting dozens of great photos on our Facebook page during the coming days so please take a look and “like” our page if you haven’t already done so.

RECOGNIZING THE IMPACT OF COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONS NOVEMBER 12–18, 2015

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMartinsburg, West Virginia ─ During the week of November 12-18, 2015, the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation (EWVCF) will join more than 750 other community foundations across America and celebrate Community Foundation Week. For the past 25 years, the effort has raised awareness about the increasingly important role of these philanthropic organizations in fostering local collaboration between donors and nonprofit organizations. By forging these partnerships, EWVCF has been able to champion causes and develop innovative solutions to address persistent civic and economic challenges in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.

During the week, EWVCF will award the $13,000 Solomon Fine Memorial Fund grant, introduce the newly established Keep5Local Campaign that will help each of the five counties served by the Community Foundation (Jefferson, Berkeley, Morgan, Hampshire, and Hardy) build lasting legacies, and distribute nearly $30,000 in Mini-Grants to Teachers.

“Community foundations impact lives, solve problems, and improve futures,” said EWVCF President Scott Roach. “As many residents grapple with limited resources and a growing need for services, we are more determined than ever to bring our community partners together to find innovative and effective solutions for some of our most challenging social problems.”

The Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation is a local, independent, public 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that directs tax-exempt gifts from donors to endowed funds to support favorite charitable causes in the region. Founded in 1995, EWVCF provides financial stewardship for $18.5 million in endowments for nearly 200 component funds, and awards more than $500,000 in grants and scholarships annually.

Community Foundation Week, created in 1989 by former president George H.W. Bush, recognizes the work of community foundations throughout America and their collaborative approach to working with the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to address community problems. There are 27 Community Foundations in West Virginia and more than 750 across America. These foundations, which support everything from social services to youth programs, historic preservation to the environment, and education to animal advocacy, provide stewardship for more than $66 billion in charitable endowment.
