Good Samaritan Free Healthcare Fund Established at Community Foundation

In an effort to ensure that high-quality health care is available to everyone in the Eastern Panhandle, regardless of their ability to pay, a new endowment fund has been established at the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation.  The Good Samaritan Free Healthcare Fund was created to support the fine work of this vital organization which has been serving residents of Berkeley County and the surrounding area for more than a decade. The organization’s founder Cosby Potter-Davis and her husband Shelton made the very first gift to the fund in an effort to encourage others to contribute to the endowment.

Benefactors recently established the Good Samaritan Free Healthcare Fund at the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation.

“We’ve witnessed the great work being done by our volunteers, we believe in this organization, and we want to help it survive and thrive,” stated Potter-Davis. “If other people in the community feel the same way, we encourage them to make a donation as well.”

Although a specific goal hasn’t been set for the Good Samaritan Free Healthcare Fund, EWVCF Executive Director Michael Whalton would love to see this grow to a point where it covers the organization’s annual rent and facilities expenses. “If someone were to make a gift of $1 million to the Fund, either directly or through an estate plan, Good Samaritan Free Healthcare wouldn’t have to worry about fundraising and could focus virtually all of its efforts on providing the services that its patients need,” Whalton stated.  “Of course, a donation of any amount will be greatly appreciated.” Contributions can be sent to EWVCF, 229 E. Martin St., Suite 4, Martinsburg, WV 25401. Donors should write Good Samaritan Free Healthcare Fund in the memo of their check.
Since its inception in 1995, the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation has awarded grants and scholarships totaling more than $10 million and is now one of the leading grantmakers in the region. The organization manages $28 million in assets and holds endowments for more than 235 funds which support a wide range of charitable causes; from homelessness to healthcare, youth and recreation programs to senior services, the arts to community development, youth philanthropy to grants for teachers, environmental causes to local food and farm programs, and so much more. In addition, the Community Foundation will celebrate its 25th Anniversary in 2020. Many events are planned to mark this very special milestone.
