Each year, the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation (EWVCF) awards scholarships to students in the Eastern Panhandle. Sixteen of the 54 students who received EWVCF scholarships in 2014 are attending Shepherd University—4 from Jefferson County and 12 from Berkeley County. Meet one of them:

Roosevelt Boh, who received the Martin Luther King scholarship, was featured on the cover of our annual “Report to the Community” last November and is also in the Spring 2015 issue of Shepherd University Magazine. Boh, a freshman biology major on a pre-med track, is from Hedgesville. “Education is important in my family and community,” he says.”

His long-term goal is to become a medical doctor or surgeon. “It is the one profession in which I can best give back to my community and country, and make the world a better place.”

Asked what he believes made his scholarship application successful, Boh noted that it was a combination of things: expressing his career passion and conveying gratitude for any financial aid received. “I used it to provide a snapshot of why education is important for my family and community.”

Boh also shared tips for high school students who may be planning to apply for scholarships. “Whatever you do, be true to yourself, freely express your individuality in telling the jury who you are,” he says. “They will like you better if you paint yourself in clear colors of honesty and integrity.”
