Tax Advantages of Qualified Charitable Distributions from Traditional IRAs

The Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation (EWVCF) wants to remind our friends who are at least age 70½, that the US tax code allows funds to be transferred directly from their Traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to a qualified charity. While this program has been around for a number of years, it was only made permanent beginning in 2016. Prior to that Congress often didn’t approve the qualified charitable distribution (QCD) until the very end of December so it was a bit more difficult for donors to plan ahead.

Although a QCD may not be made to a donor advised fund, virtually any other charitable fund held by the Community Foundation would qualify. In order to enjoy the tax advantages provided by this program, charitable contributions must be transferred directly from a Traditional IRA to the qualified charity.  In fact, several long time donors make contributions to EWVCF from their IRA every year.  Gifts of this kind allow the donor to support multiple charitable programs and offer several tax advantages.

Keep in mind that a 401(k), SEP-IRA, or SIMPLE IRA does not qualify, but assets from those can be rolled over to a Traditional IRA and then transferred to the Community Foundation. For example, a single individual with charitable intentions could arrange for a direct transfer of $110,000 from the IRA custodian (e.g., a trust bank or brokerage firm) to the Community Foundation or any qualified charity; the donor would never receive the funds. The maximum QCD allowed in any year is $100,000.

If you have questions about the tax ramifications and how the program might help you, the October 2016 issue of the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) Journal has an excellent article about the tax advantages of using a QCD for charitable giving. http://www.aaii.com/journal/article/the-tax-advantages-of-qualified-charitable-distributions-from-iras.mobile

Of course you can always call Michael Whalton at 304.264.0353 or email us at the Community Foundation for more information.

Affiliates to Participate in Give Local America/Give2WV Event on May 2nd

On May 2, 2017, the Hampshire County Community Foundation and the Hardy County Community Foundation will join communities across the country and West Virginia for Give Local America – a 24-hour crowdfunding event that provides individuals a platform to invest in and celebrate the work of local communities and nonprofit organizations.

Since 2014, Give Local America Day has raised hundreds of millions to support local communities and organizations improving the quality of life for citizens across the country. In 2017, Give2WV, the Give Local America Day promotion for West Virginia, hopes to engage thousands of donors giving collectively more than $1 million to benefit local West Virginia communities.

By partnering with Give2WV, a program of Philanthropy West Virginia, both the Hampshire and Hardy County Community Foundations hope to engage donors in supporting broad community funds that benefit local nonprofit organizations solving our community’s most pressing challenges.

Both Community Foundations will be promoting their respective Community Impact Funds. These unrestricted funds provide the Foundations’ boards of directors the flexibility to respond to ever changing needs and opportunities. They help ensure that every year, for generations to come, there will be funds available for the Community Foundation to respond to pressing needs and opportunities in our community. In the past theses Funds have supported organizations in Hampshire and Hardy counties that provide programs that address hunger relief, substance abuse prevention, emergency medical services, youth health and wellness, animal welfare, arts enrichment programs, senior services, and much more.

The Hampshire County Community Foundation will also be promoting the Hampshire County Education Fund, which was established in 2015 with a vision of creating a permanent source of funding to support a wide range of education programs and initiatives in Hampshire County. Recently, the fund has helped launch the Mini Grants for Teachers program, which has provided 64 grants to help local teachers provide enhanced learning opportunities for over 2,300 students.

In addition to its Community Impact Fund, the Hardy County Community Foundation will be encouraging gifts to the Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College Entrepreneurial and Economic Development Fund, which was established to support the initiatives of the college’s Institute of Rural Entrepreneurship and Economic Development. Recognizing that entrepreneurship and small businesses are the cornerstone of economic development in Hardy County and the Potomac Highlands, this endowment was established to help launch new initiatives aimed at expanding entrepreneurship.

Every donation, no matter how large or small, will make a difference,” said Amy Pancake, Affiliate Director. “By growing these endowment funds we can build a tremendous, local resource to support the people and organizations who work tirelessly and selflessly to keep our community vital and strong.”

The Hampshire County Community Foundation and Hardy County Community Foundation online giving platforms can be accessed through the Give2WV.org website. On-line contributions will be accepted beginning at 12:00 a.m. on May 2nd. For more information about joining the Community Foundation for Give2WV Day, contact Amy Pancake at 304-822-7200 or 304-538-3431 or [email protected]. Daily updates with links to the Give2WV website are also made on the both affiliate Facebook pages. You can find the pages here: Hampshire CCF and Hardy CCF.

Shepherdstown Middle School Jazz Band First in the State!

Just received this photo and note from Chad Conant the Band Director at Shepherdstown Middle School. The Jazz Band there has been voted Best in the State again. Congratulations to all the musicians, and we are happy to play a small role in their success. To learn more about the Community Foundation’s Youth and Education Grants, click here.

Hello Michael,
On Feb. 26, the SMS Jazz Band was awarded 1st place in the middle school state-wide jazz competition. This earned the band the WV Honor Jazz Band Award for Middle School in 2017. We were invited to perform at the Charleston Civic Center on March 2 for the West Virginia Music Educators’ Conference, and we did! Just returned last night from the trip.

Michael, this level of achievement is possible because of the financial support of the EWVCF youth grants that the band has received. The Honor Concert was one of many this year during which the jazz band has brought the community and school together through their excellent performances of jazz music.

More to come in the grant report–just wanted to share the news and send thanks.

Gratefully,
Chad Conant
