$20,000 Flood Relief Challenge – Donate Now

Individuals, businesses, clubs, and churches interested in donating to help with flood relief can double their contributions by giving to the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation. The W. Randy Smith Family Fund recently pledged up to $10,000 in matching funds to assist with flood recovery efforts in southern West Virginia. The goal of the dollar-for-dollar challenge is to provide a total of $20,000 to the organizations that will be “working in the trenches” helping folks rebuild their homes and lives. When issuing the challenge, Randy Smith stated, “What is going to be needed more than anything else in the coming weeks is cash to help those who have lost everything.”

Flood relief donations to the Community Foundation will be matched (up to $10,000 total) and all of the funds be sent to two groups working in the region. The first is WV VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster), a collective of churches and charities focused on disaster relief for the victims of last week’s flood. “We’ve spoken with our sister Community Foundations in the region and they feel strongly that this is the best way to impact the most people who have the greatest needs,” stated EWVCF Executive Director Michael Whalton.  WV VOAD is coordinated by the United Methodist Foundation, and they take no fee for administering gifts to support the flood relief work being done by all of the partner agencies (more than a dozen churches, a food bank, Habitat for Humanity, Legal Aid, Salvation Army, and others).  This group will have the greatest impact since it serves all the counties that were affected by the floods.

A smaller portion of our donation will be directed to the Nicholas County Community Foundation to help teachers and schools replace books, supplies, and materials at several Nicholas County schools which were heavily damaged by the flood. The Nicholas County Community Foundation is also not taking any fees for distributing 100% of flood relief donations.

To make a tax-deductible contribution that will be matched dollar-for-dollar, send a check to the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation, 229 E. Martin Street, Suite 4, Martinsburg, WV 25401. Write “Matching Fund Flood Relief” in the memo. Every dollar collected will go directly to the relief effort. If you prefer to give online, you may do so by clicking the DONATE NOW button on the right side of this web page. Keep in mind that the credit card processing company charges a 3% fee so please consider mailing a check so your entire gift is sent to put to use helping those in need.

Summer Newsletter Hot Off the Press

We decided to start publishing a Summer Newsletter again because it gives us an opportunity to feature great stories about our new Funds, updates on our Grants programs, profiles of a few of our outstanding Scholarship recipients, and much more. This 8-page publication just arrived from the designer/printer and, in addition to posting it here on our web site, we will include it in the next edition of our eNews, and feature it on Facebook.
Additionally, we decided to print a black and white version that is being mailed to 250 of our donors and partners who may not receive the electronic edition.  With so much going on at the Community Foundation these days it became apparent that we needed a publication that would feature the good works we do, day in and day out. We hope you will enjoy our Summer 2016 Newsletter.
Production on our annual Report to the Community, which focuses heavily on our history, existing endowed funds, annual investment returns, how to establish a fund, and much more, has just begun. We will keep you posted on that as well.

W. Randy Smith Family Fund Awards Grant

Donor Randy Smith, Bulldogs Booster Club President Lorrie Stilley, Coach Walker, and Community Foundation President Darlene Truman (L to R) joined four members of the football team for a photo and the presentation of a $10,000 check to help replace the aging scoreboard electronics at Coburn Field.

Former Berkeley County Sheriff Randy Smith has continued to do great things for the community after hitting the Powerball Jackpot in late 2010. Shortly after winning, he created the W. Randy Smith Family Fund with a contribution to the Community Foundation of nearly $6 million. More than $3 million in grants have been awarded from the fund since it was established and Smith has been busy throughout the winter and into spring, recommending grants to support many charitable causes in Berkeley County.

The long list of projects includes three grants to Martinsburg High. The first was to design, construct, and install the brick and electronic sign on Queen Street in front of the school. A second grant paid for two large bulldog statues that are being installed near the school entrances, and another will help fund needed repairs to the scoreboard at the Bulldog’s football stadium. Always the champion for recreation and education, Randy Smith continues to recommend grants to support a wide range of nonprofit organizations in Berkeley County. In early March, the board approved a $5,000 grant to provide uniforms for the Martinsburg Police & Fire Explorers Post 27. A joint operation of the city’s police and fire departments, this program gives older teens the opportunity to experience what it takes to be police officer or fire fighter and helps them determine if they’d like to pursue a career in public service.

Community Foundation Awards $93,150 in Scholarships to Eastern Panhandle Students

The Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation (EWVCF) honored 59 students at the annual Scholars & Donors Reception held at the Purple Iris on Thursday evening. Thirty-two endowed funds that were established by donors to honor loved ones awarded a record $93,150 in scholarships this year. Recipients included seniors from every public high school in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle.
Awards ranged from $500 to $5,000 and Martinsburg High topped the list with 18 students receiving scholarships. There were eight seniors from Musselman High, seven from Hedgesville, and three from Spring Mills. Seven Jefferson High School seniors received scholarships, as did two from Washington High. Four seniors from Berkeley Springs and one from Paw Paw rounded out the list.
A number of renewal scholarships were awarded to students already enrolled in college or university and Maerin Phillips, a second-grader at St. Joseph School, received a renewal scholarship as well. Major financial support for the Scholars & Donors Reception is provided by the foundation’s Partners in Philanthropy, especially Cornerstone Sponsors:  BB&T Wealth Management, Bowles Rice LLP, CNB Bank, First United Bank & Trust, Jefferson Distributing, and United Bank.
We will be editing and posting dozens of great photos on our Facebook page during the coming days so please take a look and “like” our page if you haven’t already done so.
